Management Considerations:
Whole Profile
- Soil profile likely to be saturated for a number of months during most years.
Surface (A) Horizons
- Manganese toxicity can occur in strongly acid soils, especially when waterlogging occurs. Raising pH by lime application will assist in reducing manganese toxicity.
Notes:
- B21 and B22 horizons are saturated especially at the base of profile. Water is moving from surrounding soil into trench as water would not pool this high in trench. Bottom of trench has turned “quick” or liquid where water has been allowed to sit for a period of time. Therefore low clay content allowing water to move through profile, even where trencher has not dug. Whole profile very sandy, with slight increase in clay content further down.
