Australian Soil Classification: Vertic (& Ferric), Mottled-Subnatric, Brown SODOSOL

Northcote Factual Key: Duplex.

General Landscape Description: Level plain within the Victorian volcanic plains. Flat gently sloping side of broad depression.
Site Description: Mound or 'puff' component of gilgai microrelief.
Land Use: Raised beds with canola.

Soil Profile Morphology:

Surface Soil

A1	0-8/10 cm	Dark greyish brown (10YR4/2) with rusty root channel mottling; loam; apedal; weak consistence dry; pH 5; clear and wavy change to:	SFS9b Profile
A2	8/10-30 cm	Conspicuously bleached (10YR8/2d) at base of horizon; loamy gravel; very abundant (~90%) fine buckshot; pH 6.5; abrupt change to:
Subsoil
B21tss	30-100 cm	Olive brown (2.5Y4/4) with faint abundant (~50%) yellowish brown (10YR5/6-6/6) mottles; heavy clay; fine polyhedral structure; few fine buckshot; slickensides at 80cm depth; pH 6.8.
B22	100+ cm	As above.

Key Profile Features:

Strong texture contrast between surface (A) horizons and subsoil (B21) horizon.
Conspicuously bleached surface (A2) horizon.
Abundant ‘buckshot’ gravel throughout subsurface (A2) horizon.
