General Land Unit Description:
This land unit consists of the rises and low hills of the Ordovician marine sediments around Ballarat. The soils tend to be shallow stony soils (Rudosols, Dermosols) on the crests and steep slopes, with deeper texture contrast soils (Kurosols, Chromosols) on the gentle slopes and fans.

Soil Profile Morphology

0-35 cm

Very dark greyish brown (10YR3/2) fine sandy clay loam, firm consistence when dry, many coarse sandstone fragments, pH 5.3. Sharp transition to:

Subsoil

35+ cm

Brown (10YR4/3) heavy clay, red mottles, strong blocky structure (5-10 mm), firm consistence when moderately moist, pH 5.4.

Key profile features:

Acidic topsoil

Acidic subsoil

Strong texture contrast between topsoil and subsoil

Coarse fragments in topsoil
