Land Unit: Grampians Alluvial

Aust. Soil Class.: Calcic, Mesonatric, Grey SODOSOL (confidence level 3)

General Land Unit Description:
This land unit consists of the alluvial plains around the Grampians. The soils are commonly poorly drained Grey Sodosols in association with Podosols. Some areas experience months of inundation. These soils are commonly Hydrosols. The vegetation is mainly thick scrubby tea tree on the wetter soils.

Soil Profile Morphology

0-30 cm

Very dark greyish brown (10YR3/2) loamy sand, pH 4.8. Clear transition to:

30-40 cm

Pale brown (10YR6/3) loamy sand, conspicuously bleached (10YR7/2) when dry. Sharp transition to:

Subsoil

B21

40-60 cm

Very dark grey (10YR4/1) heavy clay, strong blocky structure (20-50 mm), pH 7.9. Clear transition to:

B22

60+ cm

Light brownish grey (2.5Y6/2) heavy clay, with yellowish brown mottles, carbonate nodules are common, pH 8.9.

Key profile features:

Sandy topsoil

Bleached A2 horizon

Strong textural contrast between topsoil and subsoil

Calcium carbonate at depth

Sodic subsoil

Subsoil dispersive when dry
