General Land Unit Description:
The rolling low hill and slopes of Mount Eckersley, north of Heywood, consist of Black Dermosols and Chromosols. There are minor occurrences of Ferric Brown Chromosols, particularly on crests, and shallow, black self-mulching Vertosols on lower slopes.

A10-35 cmBlack (10YR2/1) clay loam, self mulching surface condition, strong structure (10-20 mm), very weak consistence when dry, pH 5.5. Clear transition to:

B2135-45 cmVery dark grey (10YR3/1) medium clay, strong blocky structure (20-50 mm), ferromanganiferous nodules are abundant. Clear transition to:

B2245-75 cmVery dark greyish brown (10YR3/2) heavy clay, ferromanganiferous nodules are common, pH 6.5. Gradational transition to:

B2375+ cmBrown (10YR5/3) heavy clay, ferruginous nodules (<2 mm) are common, basalt fragments are common (200-600 mm), pH 6.9.
