Land Unit: Macarthur Basalts

Aust. Soil Class.: Bleached-Ferric, ?, Brown CHROMOSOL (confidence level 2).

General Land Unit Description:
The undulating rises to the west of Macarthur consist of Mottled Brown Chromosols with sporadically bleached subsurface horizons. Black Endohypersodic Vertosols are predominant on the flats which are the prominent landscape element of this unit. Minor shallow Mottled Brown Chromosols occur on slopes and crests also.

Dark reddish brown (5YR3/3) fine sandy loam, hardsetting surface, pH 5.2. Clear transition to:

Yellowish red (5YR4/6) fine sandy clay loam, bleached (5YR7/3) when dry, many ferromanganiferous nodules. Sharp transition to:

B21

30-50 cm

Strong brown (7.5YR4/6) medium clay, strong blocky structure (5-10 mm), pH 6.2. Gradual transition to:

B22

50+ cm

Yellowish brown (10YR5/6) medium clay, red mottles (2.5YR4/6), strong blocky structure (5-10 mm), pH 6.4.

Key profile features:

Strongly acidic topsoil

Hardsetting topsoil

Bleached A2 horizon

Many ferromanganiferious nodules in A2 horizon

Mottled subsoil
