1-13 Drik Drik nested Dolines

Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Locality:

7121-253912. Five kilometres south of Drik Drik.

Access:

Private road off the Nelson-Winnap Road.

Geology/Geomorphology:

In the vicinity of the Drik Drik fault scarp are a group of seven nested dolines developed in Bridgewater Formation dune limestones. These dolines are generally blind and exhibit a regular inverted cone morphology. One of the dolines has a 25 metre shaft that terminates at a stream. Other sinkholes are found nearby.

Significance:

State. Nested dolines are rare in the state; the only similar dolines in Victoria are found in the Buchan area.

Management:

The current usage of DD-3 as a domestic rubbish tip should be terminated and future dumping prohibited. The Shire should provide a local tip site as rubbish accumulation in dolines is a recurrent problem in the Drik Drik area.
