1-23 Mount Vandyke

  • An assessment of the Geological/Geomorphological Significance of Private Land in the Shire of Portland (1981) by N. Rosengren, J Mallen, T Shepherd.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Locality:

7121-365867. Seven kilometres south-south-west of Lyons.

Access:

T & W Road off Princes Highway.

Ownership:

Small area of private land surrounded by public land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

Mount Vandyke is a tuff and ejectamenta cone. A narrow fissure eruption flow of Greenwald-Cobboboonee Basalt is located on the south-east of the cone.

Significance:

Local. The cleared area of Mount Vandyke provides limited outcrop of Greenwald-Cobboboonee Basalt.

Management:

Limited quarrying would provide more exposures and could be permitted.
