1-3 Interdune wetlands - Palparra Settlement

  • An assessment of the Geological/Geomorphological Significance of Private Land in the Shire of Portland (1981) by N. Rosengren, J Mallen, T Shepherd.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Locality:

7122-043997. Six kilometres north-east of Honeysuckle.

Access:

Norman Road off Princes Highway.

Geology/Geomorphology:

These wetlands hold water seasonally and occur between relatively high siliceous dunes.

Significance:

Regional. This low parallel sequence of dune ridges and swales is typical of the coastal plains of the Portland Shire.

Management:

Because the local relief of these wetlands is very small, the form of the swamp basins can be easily destroyed by ploughing or by planting over with softwood forests. The area delineated is the minimum necessary to maintain the distinctive wetland patterns.
