1-9 Winnap Sinkholes

An assessment of the Geological/Geomorphological Significance of Private Land in the Shire of Portland (1981) by N. Rosengren, J Mallen, T Shepherd.

Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Locality:

7122-280001. Four kilometres south-east of Dartmoor.

Access:

Winnap Railway Station Road off Princes Highway.

Ownership:

Mainly private land with some public land along the Crawford River.

Geology/Geomorphology:

At this site sinkholes and closed depressions have formed in Bridgewater Formation dune limestone.

Significance:

Local. These features form part of the underground drainage catchment for the Crawford River and are examples of closed depressions in karst landscape.

Management:

Rubbish dumping in sinkholes and other activities which can potentially pollute underground water should be prohibited.
