2-3 Tarragal Karst Area

  • An assessment of the Geological/Geomorphological Significance of Private Land in the Shire of Portland (1981) by N. Rosengren, J Mallen, T Shepherd.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website (external link) for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Locality:

7121-390570. Area bounded by Bridgewater Lakes Road and Telegraph Road.

Access:

Bridgewater Lakes Road.

Ownership:

Private land and some Crown Land (Bats Ridges Faunal Reserve)
Geology/Geomorphology:

This area of Bridgewater Formation dune limestone is characterised by closed depressions and underground drainage typical of karst areas. Caves are located in the west of the area on both private and Crown Land. A quarry shows good exposures of Bridgewater Formation dune limestone, but does not threaten important karst sites.

Significance:

Regional. The Tarragal area is typical of karst landscape formed on Bridgewater Formation dune calcarenites.

Management:

Buffer areas should be established between the quarry and the Bats Ridges Faunal Reserve.
