3-3 Landslip north of Tahara
This information has been developed from the publications:
- An assessment of the Geological/Geomorphological Significance of Private Land in the Shire of Portland (1981) by N. Rosengren, J Mallen, T Shepherd.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website (external link) for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography. |
| Locality: | 7222-565252. Six kilometres north-west of Tahara. |
| Access: | Wards Lane off Merino-Coleraine Road. |
Geology/Geomorphology:
| This site combines a rotational slide, small earthflows, and a series of step-like terracettes on the southern edge of the headwall. Weathered Cretaceous sediments (Otway Group) are exposed below a weathering profile of mottled clays and a ferric concretionary horizon. A small swamp fed by a spring occurs at the base of the slide. The headwall of the slide is actively eroding.
Because of the proximity of this slide to Wards Land, it is probable that some engineering works will be necessary to avoid road damage. |
