4-1 Old Crawford River Channel Swamps

  • An assessment of the Geological/Geomorphological Significance of Private Land in the Shire of Portland (1981) by N. Rosengren, J Mallen, T Shepherd.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Locality:

7221-461875. Never Never Swamp.
7221-463890. North-west of Heywood.

Access:

Sinclair Settlement Road and Lindons Road (Cain Swamp) off Princes Highway.

Geology/Geomorphology:

These wetlands form part of a chain of swamps in a prior channel of the Crawford River. This channel was abandoned because of river capture of the Crawford by a tributary of the Glenelg River.

Significance:

State. This large site consists of a group of related features which are important in the interpretation of the history of the Crawford River capture.

Management:

Large scale land disturbance which would obscure the integrated nature of the wetland and channel features should be prohibited.
