5-16 Quarry exposure of Heystesbury Limestone near Tyrendarra

Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Locality:

7221-733677. Six kilometres east-south-east of Tyrendarra.

Access:

Princes Highway between Tyrendarra and Tyrendarra East.

Geology:

An abandoned quarry provides good exposures of Heytesbury (Glenelg) Group limestone containing abundant flinty plates and nodules of recrystallised limestone. The limestone is poorly fossiliferous except for one prominent band of comminuted shell.

Significance:

Regional. This is one of the best quarry exposures of the Heytesbury Group limestone available. As the quarry has now been abandoned, safe access is available to the exposure.

Management:

Renewed quarrying would be compatible with maintaining the value of the site. If no further quarry activity occurs, it may be necessary to periodically clear one of the faces to provide fresh limestone exposures.
