5-6 Tarrabah Limestone Bluffs

An assessment of the Geological/Geomorphological Significance of Private Land in the Shire of Portland (1981) by N. Rosengren, J Mallen, T Shepherd.

Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Locality:

7221-700666. Four kilometres south-east of Tyrendarra.

Access:

Tyrendarra School House Road.

Geology/Geomorphology:

Limestone pillars and pavements have developed in bluffs of dune calcarenite (Bridgewater Formation). Microsolutional features are common but there is little cave development.

Significance:

Regional. These bluffs display solutions features that are uncommon in rocks of the Bridgewater Formation.

Management:

Quarrying, rubbish dumping, and swamp draining will degrade the features and should be prohibited.
