The Packer’s railway cutting (Site No. 5) is situated west of Tallangatta. A hardpan similar to that in the Tallangatta fan is exposed on the eastern flank of the ridge, at about 2 m below the soil surface (Figure 2c). It dips to the east at a slightly steeper angle than the surface and appears to continue below the floor of the cutting (Photo 9). To the west, it rises at a slightly steeper angle than the soil surface (about 10 degrees) and appears to fade out as the surface slope steepens (Figure 5).
