Ferrosols

Ferrosols, traditionally known as 'krasnozems', have friable red subsoils high in free iron oxide, and lack strong texture contrast between the surface (A) horizons and subsoil (B) horizons. They occur along the Great Divide, from Romsey to Beaufort, on volcanic plains in areas of higher rainfall, and also on numerous volcanic vents. The structure is generally very well developed but there are exceptions, notably in the Romsey - Lancefield area.

This map of Ferrosols in the North Central region has been developed by Jim Rowan and is based on the Land Systems of Victoria (1:250 000). It shows areas where Ferrosols are most likely to occur within the region. Note that other soil types may also occur within these mapped areas (although they are likely to be a more minor component).
