These mullock heaps are all the remains of the Union Mine. The miners had to dig through the basalt to get to the gold bearing gravels below. The gravels were crushed and the gold obtained from them. The heaps are the gravel wastes. In recent years the gravels have been used to surface roads in the district and to landscape gardens in the Melbourne area.
