This cairn was built to commemorate the visit by Major Mitchell. In the background is Mt Glasgow. This cairn is in the centre of the Amherst United Borough and Gold Field Common, which was created in 1862. The purpose of this 180 hectares was to allow miners to graze a house cow. They usually had no land of their own. It is still possible for ratepayers of the Shire of Talbot and Clunes to graze up to 4 cattle on the common.
