Location:

Cleever Hill - 523413. Shire of Ballan. Valley of Werribee River, west of Bald Hill, 8 km north of Ballan.

Access:

Stone Hut Road.

Ownership:

Private land.

Site Description:

South of Blakeville, the orientation of the headwaters of the Werribee River is determined by remnants of lava flows from several eruption points to the north and west. The valley is generally lateral to the eastern edge of the lava, although further north the stream crosses the lava in several places. The valley morphology is complex and includes wide swampy sectors south of Stone Hut Road. A mineral spring (Hogans) occurs in the Ordovician rocks at the base of the basalt on the western side of the valley 1 km north of ‘Cottonwood’.

Significance:

Regional. The site is an example of valley adjustment to lava flows in the headwaters of the Werribee River.

Management:

Class 3. Continued rural land use is the most appropriate way to maintain the significance features of the site.
