Gunnamatta

Gunnamatta - Symbol: Gu

Along the coastline west of Cape Schanck, there is a narrow strip of land that is highly subject to wind erosion. Where this occurs, the vegetation is coastal headland shrub, but much of the area is highly disturbed by wind erosion. The soils are dominantly calcareous sands and large fragments of calcarenite or lime cemented sands are littered on the surface. These resemble fossil roots. All this area is part of the Point Nepean National Park. These soils can best be described as Shelly Calcarosols using the Australian Soil Classification.

As the area is subject to wind erosion, active reclamation efforts are being carried out to minimise further erosion.
