4.2.2.6 - Do I need a drainage system?

Return to Main Menu | Return to Step 4 | Return to Step 4.2.2 | Next Step
Soils are not normally saturated under centre pivot irrigation as typically less water is applied than the total soil water deficit. The experience of landowners with centre pivots is that run-off normally only occurs after significant rainfall events.

However, even temporary ponding and waterlogging is undesirable where maximum productivity is sought.

Thus, drainage of the irrigated area should be incorporated in the design, but does not need to be as comprehensive as for border-check irrigation.

A drainage reuse system is desirable, where possible in conjunction with a water supply storage.
