Salinity Province 64, Lismore

The Lismore Salinity Province adjoins the north of the Lake Corangamite Province and has nearly 3% mapped salinity. It occurs mostly on the Pliocene sedimentary local Groundwater Flow Systems near the Derrinallum – Lismore area. The most at risk areas are depressions and drainage lines leading towards Lake Corangamite, as well as similar low-lying areas on the basalt plains in the east of the province.
Unlike other Salinity Provinces in the Lake Corangamite area, salinity in this province appears to be more secondary salinity than naturally occurring or primary salinity that resulted from raised groundwater levels that followed clearing for agriculture.
Management approaches should endeavour to increase plant water use in pasture and cropping areas near depressions and drainage lines where waterlogging and salinity have been mapped. Improved surface drainage may have exacerbated soil salinisation in some low-lying areas by removing seasonal freshwater ponding, but re-instatement of wetlands will be suitable in only limited circumstances.

1 Please Note: The ‘Recorded Soil Salinity Area’ indicated in the Salinity Province Attribute Table, comprises the total geographic area that has been mapped as having, or showing symptoms of, dryland soil salinity at some time (past or present). As dryland salinity occurrence in the Victorian landscape exhibits many different levels of severity and can change due to climate, landuse and vegetation, previously mapped areas may no longer be showing symptoms. In addition, as not all parts of the State have been mapped, or mapped in the same way, the mapping may not have captured some occurrences.
The soil salinity mapping used to calculate this ‘area’ does not cover irrigation regions. In irrigation regions, depth to watertable and watertable salinity mapping has been used to convey the threat of high watertables on soil waterlogging and/or soil salinisation and these areas are not included in this ‘area‘ calculation.
