Scientific Name:Baumea spp.

Status:

Australian natives.

Plant Description:

Perennial sedges with rhizomes. Tufted with erect stems and flattened or circular or reduced leaves. Flower-heads are panicle-like, subtended by stem-like bracts. Spikelets are usually clustered, having 1-5 flowers and a few spirally arranged glumes. Fruit is a triangular or circular nut crowned by the persistent enlarged base of the style (the elongated part of the female organ or carpel).

Habitat:

Growing in swamps and lakes or in damp heaths. Mostly indicative of non-saline environments.

Comments:

Nine species of Twig-rush grow in Victoria, including Jointed Twig-rush (Baumea articulata), Square Twig-rush (Baumea tetragona), Soft Twig-rush (Baumea rubiginosa) and Pale Twig-rush (Baumea acuta). Only Bare Twig-rush (Baumea juncea) appears to have some salt tolerance.
