Not declared noxious in Victoria.

Habitat:

Occurs over a wide range of climatic conditions, with Mediterranean-type climates providing the optimum growth conditions (Wallace 1997). Common on soils low in potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen, and so often dominates in indigenous and sown pastures where soil fertility has been allowed to decline (Wallace 1997). It is also a weed of waste place and sheep camps, and is becoming more common in direct drilled crops (Wallace 1997). Squirrel-tail fescue invades dry coastal vegetation, heathland and heathy woodland, mallee shrubland, lowland grassland and grassy woodland, dry sclerophyll forest and woodland, riparian vegetation, freshwater wetland (seasonal), rock outcrop vegetation, and alpine and subalpine vegetation (Carr et al 1992).
