Soil
The surface soils are generally very dark brownish grey to very dark greyish brown heavy clay loams to clays, generally high in organic matter. By about 20 to 40 cm the soil generally becomes gradually paler in colour with grey or greyish brown finely mottled with yellowish brown being common. The subsoil textures range from silty clays to heavy clays.
Two soil profiles are described in Aldrick et al. (1992), Profile Number 2 and Profile Number 39. The descriptions are in accord with the brief description given above with additional data showing the soil profile to be low in soluble salts, low sodicity and strongly acid to very strongly acid (pH <5.1) throughout. The available potassium and phosphorus in the surface soil was quite adequate for pasture growth.
