Yarragon (Yg)

Geology Recent alluvium and colluvium derived from Strzelecki hills. Landform Sheet flood fan, alluvial fan, alluvial plain.

Land Use

The original vegetation was probably swamp gum, swamp paperbark, blackwood and black wattle. This vegetation is now largely cleared and sown to improved pasture grazed by dairy and beef cattle.

Soils

The surface soils are typically greyish brown to very dark greyish brown clay loams and silty clay loams to light clays to about 20 cm. Below this, colours show considerable variation ranging from dark greyish brown to pale brown with soil textures ranging from silty clay loams to silty clays. Pale brown mottled with yellowish brown or reddish brown silty clays to medium clays generally occur from about 80 cm. Soil Pit Site GP19 is an example of a Dermosolic Hydrosol near Darnum.

SITE WAR 5	Dermosolic, Redoxic Hydrosol - located on a plain near Darnum South.
Surface Soil:
A1	0-20 cm	Brown (10YR5/3) light clay; pH 5.7; clear change to:
Subsoil:
B21	20-80 cm	Light brownish grey (10YR6/2) medium clay; pH 6.2; gradual change:
B22	80-120 cm	Light grey (10YR7/1) with brownish yellow (10YR6/6) mottles; medium clay; pH 5.5.

SITE WAR 8	Dermosolic Hydrosol - located on a plain near Gainsborough.
Surface Soil:
A1	0-30 cm	Brown (10YR5/3) silty light clay; pH 5.4; clear change to:
Subsoil:
B2	30-100 cm	Light brownish grey (10YR6/2) medium clay; pH 6.1.

A1	0-30 cm	Brown (10YR5/3) silty clay loam; pH 5.3; gradual change to:
Subsoil:
B21	30-80 cm	Pale brown (10YR6/3) silty light clay; pH 5.6:
B22	80-100 cm	Pale brown (10YR6/3) light medium clay; pH 6.3.

SITE WAR 10	Acidic, Dermosolic Hydrosol using the Australian Soil Classification - located on a broad drainage depression at Ellinbank.
Surface Soil:
A1	0-20 cm	Greyish brown (10YR5/2) light clay; pH 5.0; clear change to:
Subsoil:
B21	20-60 cm	Light grey (10YR7/2) with yellowish brown (10YR5/8) mottles; medium clay; pH 5.1:
B22	60-100 cm	Light grey (10YR7/2) with yellowish brown (10YR5/8) mottles; medium clay; pH 5.4.
