Soils of the Wimmera Region | Detailed Soil Surveys | Soil and Landform Mapping | Soil Management | Wimmera Region Soil Pits
| The Wimmera region has a great diversity of soil types which reflect differences in parent material, topography, climate, organic activity and age (e.g. degree of weathering). For agricultural purposes, many of these soils have some chemical and physical limitations (e.g. sodicity) which require careful management. |
Cultivated soil in the Wimmera region |
The major soil types cultivated in the Wimmera region are the self-mulching Vertosols, Red Sodosols and Calcarosols. Wimmera’s cropping soils support the growth of major crops such as wheat and barley as well as chickpeas, field peas, canola, oats, faba beans and lentils amongst others.
