Major Soil Groups

Vertosols | Calcarosols | Hardsetting Sodosols | Non-hardsetting Sodosols

Thirteen major soil groups have been described in the Eastern Wimmera region by Nabil Badawy (1984).

Three soil groups are recognised within the Vertosol Order:

Group 1. Black and Grey Self-Mulching Vertosols

Group 2. Brown and Red Self-Mulching Vertosols

Group 3. Vertosols with Bleached Subsurface Horizons

One soil group is recognised within the Calcarosol Order:

Group 4. Calcareous earths

Six soil groups are recognised within the Hardsetting Sodosols Order:

Group 6. Hardsetting Red Sodosols

Group 7. Hardsetting Mottled Red Sodosols

Group 8. Hardsetting Brown Sodosols

Group 9. Hardsetting Mottled Brown Sodosols

Group 10. Hardsetting Yellow Sodosols

Group 11. Hardsetting Mottled Yellow Sodosols

Two soil groups are recognised within the Non-hardsetting Sodosols Order:

Group 12. Non-hardsetting (friable) Mottled Red Sodosols

Group 13. Non-hardsetting (friable) Mottled Yellow Sodosols
