Description

Greyish brown (10YR5/2); light clay; subplastic; cracking and slightly self-mulching surface condition; moderate coarse subangular blocky structure; very strong consistence (dry); pH 6.5; clear change to

B2

15–70+

Grey (10YR5/1); heavy clay; subplastic; moderate very coarse prismatic structure; very strong consistence drypH 7.6.
Management considerations
  • Cracking clay profile, high clay percentage
  • Neutral thin surface soil and subsoil, alkaline at depth
  • Structured surface, occasional self mulching feels lighter than lab data suggests (subplastic)
  • Subsoil is sodic and may be strongly sodic at depth Subsoil does disperse; highly dispersible.
  • Cracking may allow air and seasonal moisture to penetrate
  • Very strong consistence when dry, implications for compaction and implement use
  • Landform element, flat: poor site drainage
