Description

A1

0–15

Very dark greyish brown (10YR3/2); loamy sand; single grain (structureless); weak consistence (dry); pH 6.1.

A2

15–20

Conspicuously bleached loamy sand; single grain (structureless); weak consistence (dry); contains a common (10%) amount of ferruginous nodules; pH 7.4; sharp boundary to:

A3

20–21

Conspicuously bleached cemented sand capping; pH 7.8.

B21

21–35

Dark greyish brown (10YR4/2) with (10YR5/4) and (7.5YR4/6) mottles; heavy clay; moderate columnar structure; very strong consistence (dry); pH 8.3.

B22k

35–65

Yellowish brown (10YR5/6) with (5YR5/6) mottles; medium heavy clay; strong prismatic, parting to strong blocky structure; strong consistence (moist); contains very few (2%) ferruginous nodules and many (50%) soft calcareous segregations; pH 8.9.

C

65+

Weathered sandstone.
Management considerations
  • Strong texture contrast between sandy surface (A) horizons and subsoil (B21) horizon. Only moderately deep
  • Non hardsetting nature of surface soil. Susceptible to wind, sheet and rill erosion, given texture, horizon depths and texture contrast nature
  • Coarse columnar structure at top of subsoil with capping, restrictive to water and gaseous movement.
  • Slightly acidic surface soil, alkaline subsoil which is strongly sodic and dispersible
