Vertic, Mottled-Subnatric, Grey SODOSOL

A2

10–20

Greyish brown (10YR5/2) with very few fine faint orange root lining mottles; sporadically bleached (10YR7/2 dry); silty loam (heavy); massive (structureless); weak consistence when moderately moist; few fine ferruginous organic root linings; pH 6.5; abrupt and smooth boundary to:

B21

20–35

Very dark greyish brown (2.5Y3/2) with few fine faint orange root lining and dark grey mottles; medium heavy clay; strong medium to fine prismatic structure; smooth ped-fabric; strong consistence when moderately moist; common distinct clay skins; pH 7.0; gradual and smooth boundary to:

B22

35–60

Greyish brown (2.5Y5/2) with many (25%) distinct medium yellowish brown (10R5/8) mottles; medium heavy clay; moderate coarse columnar, parting to moderate fine to medium polyhedral structure; smooth fabric; very firm consistence when moderately moist; very few fine ferruginous nodules; few faint slickensides; pH 8.0; gradual and smooth boundary to:

B23

60–90

Light olive brown (2.5Y5/4) with few fine faint orange mottles; medium heavy clay; massive (structureless); weak consistence when moist; very few to few medium ferruginous and calcareous nodules; pH 8.0; gradual smooth boundary to:

B24

90–130

Light olive brown (2.5Y5/4) with common coarse faint light olive brown (2.5Y5/6) mottles; medium heavy clay; moderate coarse lenticular structure; smooth ped-fabric; weak consistence when moist; few medium to coarse ferruginous nodules and soft calcareous segregations; pH 8.0; gradual and smooth boundary to:

      B25

130-150+

Light brownish grey (2.5Y6/3) with common medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR5/6) mottles; medium clay; strong medium to coarse polyhedral structure; smooth fabric; firm consistence when moist; common faint slickensides; pH 8.0.

Management Considerations:

  • There is significant microrelief due to drainage, rabbit control and vertic subsoil.
  • Vertic properties in the upper B horizon (subsoil too moist to indicate possible structure).
  • Some slickensides observed down profile.
  • Medium heavy clay subsoils with olive colouring and mottling indicates strong limitations to drainage.
  • Slightly acidic surface soil trending neutral to alkaline with depth.
