Status:

Introduced from South Africa. Naturalised in Australia and New Zealand.

Plant Description:

Annual herb to 50 cm high. Silver-woolly overall. Basal leaves soon withering. Stem leaves oblanceolate (backward pointing spear-shaped), 1-5 cm long and 1-7 mm wide.

Flower-heads 10-40 in near-globular clusters. Inner flower bracts with purple claws. Each head has 20-30 female floreets and a few bisexual florets. Fruit an achene, 0.4 mm long, brown with a 1.5 mm pappus.

Habitat:

Scattered through most of the higher rainfall areas of Victoria on disturbed sites. Usually indicative of freshwater environments but may grow on the fringes of salt lakes and swamps.
