Management of Soil Organic Matter
Decomposition | Forms and Function | Management of Soil Organic Matter | Carbon Cycle
Soil health is promoted by encouraging the flow of organic matter into and through the soil along with its attendant energy and nutrients. The important side benefit of this is that humus can build-up and enhance soil structure.
Organic matter management is an important part of a soil health management plan.
Preserving existing soil organic matter
Building additional soil organic matter
Practices that foster plant growth will increase the amount of roots and residues added to soil. They are closely related to the practices used to
improve soil structure. They include:
- Retention of vegetative material on the soil
- Increasing water use efficiency
- Adding organic amendments (compost, manure)
