Spartina (Spartina spp.)

Potential Distribution

Scientific name:Spartina anglica and Spartina x townsendii

Common name:

Spartina

Status:

Declared a noxious aquatic species under the Fisheries Act 1995. Not listed under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994.

Habitat:

The natural habit of both species is unstable, tidal, sandy or bare muddy places in estuaries or sheltered coasts (Bridgewater 1996). Spartina invades and alters plant communities, notably White mangrove areas and saltmarsh vegetation communities (Bridgewater 1996). Both species of Spartina species are a very serious threat to dry coastal vegetation (Carr et al 1992).
